264: Fragments of a Journey

“Fragments of a Journey”
Sholeh Wolpé

Father feeds the fire.
Flames leap and hypnotize.
Why venture into the snow?

She squirts ink on her mother's god,
Is told: Darkness has claimed you.

She points to the glossy light pulsing
Says: Look, I'm bathed in truth.

No, child, her mother shakes her head,
That's The Beloved leaving your soul.

The world is not a merry-go-round.
She axes the horses
Steps off the spinning platform.

A mound of question marks
Allows greater room for oxygen
Than periods and exclamation marks.

Breath at what price?
The air is aflame.
